Author Archive: Tayler Riggen

Tayler Riggen was born and raised in Marion County, Iowa. From his earliest days his father would take him squirrel hunting, and since, he has been completely addicted to the outdoors. Tayler has made the outdoors less like a hobby, and more like a way of life. He is now working for Mossy Oak Properties out of Albia, specializing in the brokerage and management of many properties across the state. Living in the heart of a big buck country has fueled Tayler’s year round pursuit of giant mature whitetails. Tayler also has a passion for other game, making regular trips west in search of mule deer, elk, pronghorn and more. From bowfishing the rivers, to hiking the timber, Tayler will be filming so you can follow along. Tayler also shares his passion for hunting with his wife, who will be regularly tagging along to check trail cameras, pick up sheds, and in the 365 day a year, trophy pursuit. Whether Tayler is sitting in a treestand, planting food plots, or helping a client with a property, you can follow along, learning with him from his successes as well as failures.

The Truth About Ticks

The Truth About Ticks

| May 9, 2013

I’ll be honest, I hadn’t planned to still be chasing turkeys around on May 8.  But with some strange weather, a lot of time spent at work, and some bad luck (or bad hunting), I’m still holding tags.  I’ve spent most of my limited time in the turkey woods needing to push the envelope.  So [...]

It’s been a busy Spring for me so far. Between getting trees planted, work, and trying to help people buy or sell their “dream farm”, it’s been tough for me to find time to get a turkey on the ground.  For those of you that are in the same boat, don’t worry, there’s plenty of [...]

The Truth About Morels

I’m sitting here in southern Iowa currently watching it rain, as it has done for the last few days.  It seems like rain totals have varied pretty drastically around the area, as I’ve been getting quite a few different reports. All I know is what my gauge says, and over the last few days we [...]

For most of us, we are coming to the end of a bit of a lull in our “trophy pursuit”. I have just about covered all of the shed hunting spots I usually hit, and I’m anxious to get after the Iowa thunder chickens next week. I thought I would bring you an update from [...]

The End of an Era, “Hank”

The End of an Era, “Hank”

| March 28, 2013

For a dedicated bowhunter, this is one of the worst text messages you can get. I received a picture this week from a friend, of one of my top Hit List bucks, and he looks like this now.   “Hank Williams Jr.” isn’t the biggest deer in the woods. In fact, I know there are [...]

Creating “No Pressure” Hunting Situations

Creating “No Pressure” Hunting Situations

| March 21, 2013

In my last article, I gave the opinion that the hunting world has become obsessed with the final score of a rack. I include myself with that statement. I am hopelessly addicted to large racked whitetails. For most, that obsession comes with a certain level of pressure. Pressure from yourself, pressure from the rest of [...]
